Encouraging Older Adults to Stay Active

The National Council on Aging recently published an article encouraging older adults to stay active during the coronavirus pandemic. The article points out that many seniors are hesitant to engage in their normal exercise routine because they are concerned they may become injured. However, research has shown there is no increased risk of exercising at home versus in a group setting. A few tips to get your loved ones moving are to encourage them to: sit less and move more, move in their own way, utilize all four types of exercise (endurance, strength, balance, flexibility), and look for ways to stay motivated. Additionally, you can encourage them to stay safe during exercise by listening to their body, staying hydrated, and being aware of their environment.
